Suburban Mom Asks Twitter to Reveal Daughter's Bullies

The mother of a southwest suburban junior high student has filed a motion of discovery against social media giant Twitter, in hopes of identifying users who have posted defamatory statements about her daughter.

The student, identified only by her initials in the petition, was the subject of at least three defamatory posts on Twitter, the motion said.

All three tweets were posted last May and mentioned the girl by name, her mother claims. The tweets falsely accused her of cowardice, sexual promiscuity and passing along a venereal disease.

The messages were posted by users known only as @problemscentury and @centuryproblem, with the former account now suspended by Twitter, the motion said. The two usernames referenced the name of the school the girl attended at the time, which is located in Orland Park.

The girl’s mother has “performed various Internet searches” relating to the two users in an effort to identify them, but to no avail. The motion, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, is requesting that Twitter disclose the account information, IP addresses and other “personally identifiable information” relating to the two accounts.

Twitter did not comment on the motion Monday evening.
