Man in Custody After Climbing Rooftop of Downtown Building: CPD

A Chicago police SWAT team arrested a man on the roof of a River North building Saturday afternoon, bringing a brief standoff to a peaceful resolution.

The SWAT team was called to the corner of Clark Street and Erie Street about 1:15 p.m. after the man had an “encounter” with police patrols, according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

The circumstances of that initial encounter were unclear, but the man might have thrown unidentified objects at the officers before climbing onto up to the roof, Guglielmi said.

The man barricaded himself there until about 1:40 p.m., when the SWAT team brought him down without incident, Guglielmi said. No one was injured.

The man is currently being medically evaluated, and police are weighing whether he’ll face charges.
