Grandfather Babysitting 1-Year-Old Found Shot, Stabbed in West Town Apartment

No one was in custody in connection with the death as of 5:30 a.m. Tuesday

A man was found stabbed and shot to death inside an apartment in Chicago's West Town neighborhood on Monday night, and the child he was babysitting was missing for a short time, police said.

A department spokesperson said officers were called to the building, on the 120 block of North Wood Street, at about 9 p.m. by Chicago Fire Department personnel who were checking on a fire alarm inside a unit.

After forcing their way into the apartment, the officers found the victim unresponsive. He was laying face down with multiple stab and gunshot wounds, police said.

The man was watching a 1-year-old child, but that child was missing when authorities were on the scene. The child was later found in the care of a grandparent. Police said they didn't know if the child was taken before or after the victim was shot.

No one was in custody in connection with the death as of 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.
