Man Fatally Shot in South Austin Neighborhood: Chicago Police

The shooting took place near a charter school, multiple churches and a club for children

A man was fatally shot in Chicago’s South Austin neighborhood Friday morning.

Police said the shooting happened just after 9:30 a.m. in the 500 block of North Laramie.

There, a 30-year-old man was in the driver's seat of a car when another man walked up and opened fire, authorities said. The gunman fled the scene but no one was in custody as of noon Friday.

Police said the victim's vehicle was not parked at the time of the shooting and crashed into two poles.

The shooting took place near a charter school, multiple churches and a club for children.

School officials at Moving Everest School said a staff member performed CPR on the shooting victim. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the worker was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for evaluation.

Area North detectives are investigating.
