A man who attempted to assault a Chicago woman along the lakefront Wednesday was arrested after motorists chased him down, police said.

The 36-year-old woman was jogging on the lakefront around 1:45 p.m. on the 6400 block of South Promontory Drive when she was followed by an unknown male, Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. The man attacked her from behind and attempted to assault her, Officer Perez said.

The attack apparently was broken up by two motorists passing by. They chased down the offender then held him until police arrived.

It's not clear whether charges have been filed. Police could not confirm whether the man has been involved in past lakefront attacks.
