Wheeling Man Dies in Snowmobile Accident on Wisconsin's Lake Geneva

The man's snowmobile hit open water in the middle of the lake about 9 p.m. Sunday

The Department of Natural Resources is warning about thin ice across southern Wisconsin after the death of an Illinois man whose snowmobile went into Lake Geneva.

Fifty-three-year-old Mark Reninger of Wheeling, Illinois, died at the scene. The other man was hospitalized and treated for hypothermia.

Reninger's snowmobile hit open water in the middle of the lake about 9 p.m. Sunday, officials said. Another man jumped off his machine and stayed on the ice. He called for help, but WISN-TV reports it took about an hour for rescuers to reach him.

DNR Warden Juan Gomez says that because of all the open water in the center of the lake, they didn't want to put any emergency responders at risk until they could prepare.
