Aurora Police Search for Suspect Near University Campus

The search shut down South Lake Street between Rathbone and Prairie Streets while the search continued

A search for a suspect who fled from officers in Aurora has prompted street closures and an alert from a nearby university in the western Chicago suburb.

Police said there was “no active shooter situation” but that officers “are searching for someone who fled during a call for a suspicious person.”

The search shut down South Lake Street between Rathbone and Prairie Streets while the search continued.

Aurora University alerted students that there was a “police emergency off-campus” about a mile from the school. Students were urged to avoid the area but officials said there was no threat to the campus.

Police said the search began after they received a 911 call about a possible person with a weapon in the 200 block of Prairie Street. Officers responded to the scene and the person fled the area.

The department's K-9 unints, along with Kane county K-9 units, joined in the search.

Police said the university was not placed on lockdown as the search began but some businesses closer to the search were told to remain inside and lock their doors. They also asked a the BNSF Railroad to temporarily halt traffic, police said.
