A west suburban man found with a felony amount of marijuana on him Sunday told police he was going to get his friend “high until he passed out,” because they hadn’t seen each other in a week.
Christian Rojas, 19, 600 block of Grand Avenue in Aurora, and Christopher French, 19, 1000 block of Cypress Drive, Aurora, were stopped by police after they were spotted walking in the middle of the street near Heather Drive and Evanslawn Avenue around 3:10 p.m. Sunday.
As police approached the men, French began to put both hands inside a pocket near his stomach, police wrote in an incident report.
Officers asked French to show his hands, and he complied, they said. But they were still suspicious of the men after they smelled marijuana while standing near them.
French was cited for improper walking in a roadway and placed in handcuffs after he told police he didn’t have cash on him to post bond. Police said French pulled away from officers as they tried to detain him.
When Rojas was asked to identify himself, he gave officers a fake name, police said. He later admitted that he was afraid to give his real name because he had a warrant out for his arrest.
According to police reports, while talking with Rojas, police smelled marijuana coming from a backpack he was wearing.
The bag was searched, and inside police found two bags of suspected marijuana, a scale, and other paraphernalia. They also found $900, they said.
Rojas told police that he had gotten the money from friends who owed him money for marijuana. He had spent the day collecting the money, and was on a way to a friend’s house with French to get his friend high because they hadn’t seen each other in a week.
Police said Rojas later changed his statement about the cash that was recovered.
He said that the money actually came from a burglar, who had compensated him for items he stole from Rojas’ house.
Rojas was charged with felony delivery of marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing identification, and improper walking on the roadway.
French was charged with resisting a peace officer and for improper walking in the roadway.
