New Tenant Killed in Rogers Park Apartment Fire

Crews found the man's body just inside his apartment

An apartment fire in the Rogers Park neighborhood killed a man early Wednesday morning.

The man apparently was a new resident to the building. Fire crews were told he moved in Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building at 6633 N. Sheridan around 2:42 a.m. Wednesday.

Crews arrived to find heavy flames shooting out of sixth-floor windows overlooking the alley.  They evacuated residents from the sixth and seventh floors to warming buses and were able to put out the fire in about 10 minutes.

Fourth District Chief John Shehan said firefighters found a man’s body just inside the door of a sixth-floor apartment during their primary search. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Representatives from the medical examiner’s office say the man is in his 50s, but they are not releasing his name pending notification of the next of kin.

A 59-year-old woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
