Accidentally Released Ill. Inmate Back in Custody

A Vienna Correctional Center inmate who was accidentally released by the Illinois Department of Corrections is back in custody.

Corrections Department spokesman Tom Shaer says 38-year-old Michael Sanders was apprehended without incident in Champaign about 6 p.m. Friday, about three hours after he'd been released. Sanders is being held at the Danville Correctional Center.

Sanders was released after officials miscalculated his parole date and put him on a bus to Chicago.

Sanders was convicted in 2010 of arson, paroled and reoffended in 2012 when he was found in possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 38 months on the controlled substance conviction and served enough time to be paroled. But he hadn't completed the remainder of the first sentence.

Shaer says Sanders' release was a "rare miscalculation."
