3 Hospitalized After Suspicious Package Found at Chicago Building: CFD

Three people were taken to area hospitals after a suspicious package was found at a building in downtown Chicago Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The package was found at 131 S. Dearborn St. in the city's Loop, the Chicago Fire Department tweeted at 10:41 a.m. CST.

It was a piece of mail that was opened on the third floor of the building, fire officials said, but it was not clear what office it was found in.

The situation warranted a hazardous materials and EMS Plan 1 response, authorities said.

Three people were taken to area hospitals in good condition and 17 others refused treatment at the scene, according to fire officials.

Dearborn between Adams and Monroe streets were temporarily shut down as police and fire officials responded to the scene.

Fire officials tweeted that the situation was secured just before 11 a.m. The substance was deemed "not dangerous" and it did not catch fire, authorities said.

The incident remained under investigation.
