A fire that jumped from one home to another in southwest suburban Cicero Tuesday morning left a young boy and his mother seriously injured after officials were forced to make a dramatic rescue.
The fire sparked at around 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 5100 block of 29th Street.
Police officers were first to arrive at the scene, breaking down the home’s front door, before rescuing an 11-year-old boy.
“Seeing the 11-year-old boy right there by the front door, [the officers] dragged him out,” said Cicero Fire Chief Dominick Buscemi.
The young boy and his mother both suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition.
The flames then spread to an adjacent two-flat home as high winds whipped through the area.
Residents of the building were forced to evacuate, but authorities said all had made it out safe Tuesday morning.

“You walk out with nothing, so it’s scary,” said resident Armando Garcia. “I was actually in my shorts.”
Buscemi said at least 15 people were displaced by the blaze. The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday morning.
