What You're Doing Today (and Tonight): April 17

It's all in the (hand)bag, the Latino Film Fest opens and a rock club revs up

MAMA'S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG: Enjoy afternoon tea at the Palm Court at the Drake Hotel while viewing a fashion show featuring handbag designer Christopher Augmon's spring collection. 1:30-2:15PM, first showcase; 3:30-4:15PM, second showcase.

SPANISH CINEMA: The 25th annual Chicago Latino Film Festival kicks off tonight with a showing of "El Regalo," a film by Chilean directors Christian Galaz and Andrea Ugalde, at the AMC River East 21. A post-screening gala reception takes place at the nearby River East Art Center. 6PM, $60-$75.

HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN: Get a "sneak peek" of the LaSalle Power Co., one of the most buzzed-about bar openings of the year. The upscale rock club comes courtesy of the Eat Well Drink Better boys (Angels & Mariachis, English, etc.), so it has a pedigree to live up to. Judge for yourself tonight as local band Hey Champ and DJ White Shadow each play sets, and Metromix introduces its top 10 contestants in the "Rock 'n' Vote 2009" battle of the bands. 7PM-2AM, no cover, RSVP to rsvp@lasallepowerco.com -- or else.
