Layoffs May Be Coming for City Employees

City employees could hear as early as next week about layoffs. Mayor Daley's press secretary Jackie Heard said officials are hoping city unions will make concessions, saying doing so would be workers' "savior."

"We're holding out hope, that they will see the value," Heard said, referring to the union negotiations currently under way.

The city is asking for furlouugh days for union workers.  Non-union employees have taken 20 days in the last few years, Heard said.  Negotiations continue on a daily basis, according to Heard.

Published reports say up to 1,000 city workers may be face layoffs.
