You can't go anywhere without being bombarded by the sounds and sights of the holidays, but many people may forget that there's a significant number of people who don't celebrate Christmas -- Jews, Muslims and Jehovah's Witnesses, just to name a few.
Then there's those who celebrate Festivus. Festivus you ask? Seinfeld fanatics surely remember the episode when Cosmo Kramer and Frank Costanza celebrated the faux holiday celebration as a rejection of the commercialization of Christmas. With the economic slump making headlines, it seems like the perfect time to celebrate such frugality.
The 8th annual Festivus Holiday Hump Day extravaganza will be held December 18 at Debonair Social Club (1575 N. Milwaukee). There's no cover charge (of course), and organizers promise drink specials all night.
You can also experience such sacred Festivus traditions such as the airing of family grievances, feats of strength and an aluminum pole without any of that distracting tinsel.
Perhaps by next year, we'll dig out of this economic recession and there won't be any need for this type of celebration. Now that would be a Festivus miracle!
