City Council Honors Slain Teacher Betty Howard

The Chicago City Council has paid tribute to a special education teacher who was shot and killed late last month.

Aldermen stood during their Wednesday meeting to talk about Betty Howard's dedication to her students and her community.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the teacher's father and other family members that she lived "a life worth living" and thanked them for sharing her with the city. They mayor gave her relatives a copy of a city council resolution.

Howard was killed when a bullet pierced the wall of a real estate office where she worked part time. Police have arrested a man they say was shooting at a rival in a gang dispute.
