The Chicago Bears have a big need at the wide receiver spot, and now there’s one less player on the market that could fill it.
Green Bay Packers wideout Davante Adams, who was likely going to be the top available receiver on the free agent market this season, agreed to a four-year contract extension with the team on Friday. The deal will pay Adams $14.7 million per season, and will give him a guaranteed $32 million over the life of the deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Adams has 74 catches for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, even with quarterback Aaron Rodgers missing a big chunk of the season with a broken collarbone. He likely would have been a top free agent prize had he hit the market, but now he’s locked up and the Bears will have to turn their attention elsewhere.
Fortunately for Chicago, they may still yet have an opportunity to pick off a receiver from their bitter rival. Both Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb have one year left on their respective deals, and with Adams locked up long-term, the Packers may be forced to part ways with one of them to shed salary.
