The Chicago Bears suffered a blow to their pass rush on Thursday, as the team officially revealed that defensive lineman Bilal Nichols suffered a broken hand in the team’s Week 2 win over the Denver Broncos.
Nichols, who was removed from the game due to the injury, will not play this week against the Washington Redskins, but the team isn’t planning to put him on injured reserve due to the injury.
There is a chance, according to head coach Matt Nagy, that Nichols could play with a club on his broken hand, but it depends on how his hand heals, the coach said.
In 14 games last season, Nichols registered 28 total tackles and three sacks, with five total tackles for loss. He hit the quarterback seven times, and was a key member of the team’s pass rush down the stretch.
Nichols’ injury will likely open up playing time for Roy Robertson-Harris, who was a stand-out player in Week 1 for the Bears, and Nick Williams, who has a pair of tackles and a sack in two games so far this season for the Bears.
