Joe Maddon Reveals Shortstop Plans for Cubs in Russell's Absence

Bote played primarily third base for the Cubs last season, but could see time at short and second base this spring

The Chicago Cubs are getting ready to be without Addison Russell for the first 40 games of the season, and manager Joe Maddon revealed his initial plans to deal with his absence.

Maddon confirmed to reports in Mesa that the Cubs will give infielder David Bote the chance to back up Javier Baez at shortstop as the team starts camp this week.

Russell, who will serve the suspension after domestic abuse allegations were levied against him last season, will miss a quarter of the season.

Baez moving over to shortstop will have a big impact on the team’s plans at second base. Ben Zobrist will get chances to play second, but will also play games in the outfield. Daniel Descalso is expected to play a lot of games at second when the Cubs face right-handed pitching, according to Maddon, and Ian Happ and Bote will also see some reps at second base.
