Paul Konerko Thanks White Sox Fans in Video Message

Paul Konerko retiring after 16 seasons with the team

While a great deal of national attention has been lavished on retiring New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter over the past year or so, one member of the Chicago White Sox will also be riding into the sunset this weekend.

Paul Konerko, who has been with the team since the 1999 season, has slugged 439 home runs in his MLB career, has been to the All-Star Game on six different occasions, and helped lead the White Sox to their first World Series championship in 88 years when they won the title in 2005. All of those special moments and achievements will be relived over the course of the weekend at US Cellular Field as the Sox honor one of the best players in team history.

On Thursday, the White Sox released a video of Konerko thanking fans for their support over the years:

The 2014 season hasn’t been kind to Konerko, as he’s hit just five home runs in 214 plate appearances on the season. With Abreu taking over as the everyday first baseman, the Sox have Konerko’s replacement in the fold, but his leadership off the field is something that the team will struggle to replicate in the years to come.

Despite those concerns about the future, the team is focused on making the weekend a memorable one for the veteran slugger. On Saturday, Konerko will be honored with gifts, video tributes and speeches as the Sox celebrate Paul Konerko Day on the South Side. It is expected that Konerko’s #14 jersey will be retired by the team, and teammates from the 2005 championship squad will be on hand, including Joe Crede and Scott Podsednik.

Konerko is the all-time leader in Sox history in total bases and is ranked second on the all-time home run list, trailing only Frank Thomas in that category.
