An 11-year-old Oakley boy is dead after being shot in the head on Wednesday night in what police ruled was a self-inflicted wound that was not accidental.

Police had originally said it appeared as though the 6th grader had killed himself by accident, but on Thursday, police revised their statement.

NBC Bay Area first reported the boy's name, but as is customary in suicides, is now no longer naming him.

The shooting was reported about 7 p.m. on the 1300 block of Yosemite Circle, according to Oakley police. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene a short time later.
