Two people have been charged with trying to rob a civilian employee of the Chicago Police Department on Monday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Derrick Metcalf, 31, of the 9300 block of South Essex, was charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, according to Chicago Police. Stevie Hull, 17, was charged with attempted robbery.
The 57-year-old man was getting on his motorcycle a few minutes before 6 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Sawyer when he was approached by the man and teen, who announced a robbery, police said.
Metcalf pointed a handgun at the victim, while Hull went through his pockets and tried to take his licensed concealed-carry handgun, police said.
The man—a civilian employee of the police department, but not an officer—shot Metcalf in the neck, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Hull drove off in a silver van, but was arrested a short distance away.
The CPD employee was not injured, police said. The weapon was recovered at the scene.

Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman Mia Sissac said the employee is a detention aide.
Court information for Metcalf and Hull was not immediately available.
