Shooting, Incident Outside Suburban Walmart Leaves 2 Injured

Police were investigating a shooting outside a southwest suburban Walmart Monday afternoon following an incident that left two people hurt.

Police responded to the area surrounding the Bedford Park store at 7050 S. Cicero just before 12:30 p.m.

Authorities said the occupants of two vehicles traveling on Cicero Avenue were allegedly displaying gang signs to each other before they pulled into the Walmart parking lot.

One vehicle stopped and two people got out before the driver of the other vehicle ran over one of them. That's when police say shots were fired and the driver who allegedly ran the man over was shot.

Two people were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where they were reported to be in stable condition. The third person was taken into custody pending an investigation.

Walmart said in a statement the situation at the Bedford Park location "is an ongoing investigation and we'll continue working with local law enforcement."

"We work daily to maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone at our stores," the company said in a statement.

The store was placed on lockdown at the time of the shooting but had reopened just after 3 p.m.

Footage on social media showed people inside the Walmart gathered in a back room before crowds were released.

"A lot of [my coworkers] are shaken up," said employee David Pineda, who showed up for work after the incident happened.

A vehicle was seen outside the building with damage to the car and shattered windows.

Police said an investigation remained ongoing.
