Below is our continuous coverage of the 2012 NATO Summit, held May 19 through May 21 in Chicago.

NATO -- the North Atlantic Treaty Organization -- was created in 1949 to deter aggression from the then-Soviet Union. Its member states agree to mutual defense.

Topics of the 2012 Summit, the first time a U.S. city other than Washington, D.C. has played host, focused on Afghanistan and the modernization and expansion of the alliance.

But the summit brought protests, and lots of them. People from around the country and around the world came to Chicago to raise their voices against the consequences of NATO's actions and its policies.
