Bicyclist Killed in Forest Park Hit-and-Run

Witness said police officer told him the vehicle was stolen and ditched just a few blocks away from the crash site near 14th and Harlem

A bicyclist was killed Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle that may have been stolen.

Jeffery Schultz, 40, was riding in the right lane of Harlem Avenue near 14th Street, in Forest Park, at about 11 p.m. Sunday when he was hit from behind.

A driver who witnessed the crash said the other vehicle came up quickly from behind, going perhaps 50 MPH in the 35 MPH zone.

"He pretty much got knocked off his bike. He laid up in the grass. Me and a couple of other residents around here and a couple of other drivers got out to check to see if he was OK. He was not responsive at all," said Stephen Lewis.

Lewis said the vehicle that struck Schultz was a sedan. He said a responding police officer told him the vehicle was stolen and ditched just a few blocks away from the crash site.

Anyone with information should call the Forest Park Police Department at 708-366-2425.

Charges were filed Saturday in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of another bicylist in Chicago earlier in the week.
