Illinois' Next Solar Eclipse Will Come Sooner Than You Think

On Monday, residents and tourists in southern Illinois will be treated to a celestial event of historic proportions thanks to a total solar eclipse, but if you miss the show, you won’t have to wait as long to see the next one as you may think.

10 Things To Know About the Upcoming Solar Eclipse

In southern Illinois, viewers will experience totality of the eclipse for about two minutes and 38 seconds on Monday. The Southern Illinois University football stadium is already sold out for the event, and hotel rooms throughout the area are booked solid. Even an Amtrak train to the city sold out within 24 hours of going on sale.

If you aren’t one of the lucky folks heading down to the area for the eclipse, you’ll have a bit of time to plan your next excursion. While most areas of the U.S. that will experience Monday’s eclipse won’t be in the path of totality for the next one in 2024, Carbondale and southern Illinois will be. That eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8 in that year.

That eclipse, which will traverse the United States from southwest to northeast, will last even longer than the 2017 edition, clocking in at just over four minutes of totality, according to Eclipse2024.org.
