Rituals and Superstitions: Cubs Fans Share Their Pre-Game Customs

Chicago Cubs fans—including a former Chicago alderman—have many game day rituals they say will bring good luck to the team.

From lucky Cubbie blue, to eating particular meals, many fans rely on rituals to prepare before a big game.

Former Ald. Bob Fioretti believes a strip of land at University of Illinois Chicago holds the key to a successful push for the pennant.

“The Cubs played right here in this area on the West Side of Chicago,” he said, scrapping up dirt, which he says is lucky, from the area into a jar. “They always talk about curses, well the curse was when the Cubs moved from the West Side to the North Side.”

He said the lucky dirt needs to be spread around Wrigley Field.

Other fans say if the team wins a big game and you’re doing something special, you have to keep it up.

“Every time the Cubs play I wear my Cubs outfit,” says George Lemperis.

Joe Laurendi says he follows a special seating ritual at his house when the Cubs play.

“If the Cubs have the lead, everyone has to stay in the same position, and when they are done we change it up and keep on going,” Laurendi said. “We got two couches… a lot of people.”

Other fans told NBC 5 they have their kids stay up until the game is over or refuse to wear any Cubs gear during the postseason.
