The Chicago Cubs have been looking for a spark throughout their season as defending World Series champions, and they’re hoping they finally found one in Thursday’s win over the Washington Nationals.
In that game, the Cubs trailed 4-2 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but a furious rally, capped by a two-run double by Jon Jay, helped lead them to a 5-4 victory and pushed them to within a game of the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central race.
The timing of the hit could not have been more fortuitous. Exactly 10 years ago to the date, the Cubs picked up an incredible walk-off victory at Wrigley Field, with Aramis Ramirez launching a home run over the left field wall to guide the team to a win over the Brewers:
That home run pushed the Cubs back to the .500 mark on the season, evening their record at 40-39. They would ultimately win 46 of their final 84 games, winning the National League Central title and clinching their first playoff berth in four seasons.

This year’s Cubs will hope to replicate that feat, as Jay’s heroics prevented the team from dipping back below .500. Their record currently stands at 40-39, and they are getting ready to take on the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night in the first of a three-game series.
