North Suburban Crime Headed West, Elmhurst Police Say

Police say a crime spree in the northern suburbs appears to be making its way to Elmhurst.

While the heat is on up north, criminals appear to be targeting the western suburbs.

Residents are already being warned by victims like Kim Byrne, whose car was stolen.

“You just feel victimized,” she said. “Wow, I can’t believe they took that from my driveway.”

Byrne says she moved to Elmhurst from Chicago to get away from the crime. She said she thinks the thieves used phones or key fobs to gain access to the car since her keys were inside.

Kim’s was the first of two cars stolen on Monday morning. The second was on the 200 block of Arlington Avenue. Both luxury vehicles were found abandoned.

The first vehicle on the South Side later on that day,” said Elmhurst Police Deputy Chief Michael Mclean. “The second found by state police on the Ike.”

Police have stepped up patrols in Elmhurst.

“We have to be a little more careful,” says neighbor Chris Scalzitti.
