A convicted felon who jumped from a balcony earlier this month, eluding Cook County sheriff’s officers, seemed to be out of fresh ideas when the cops returned to his apartment earlier this week.
The first time Khalil Marbley, who was on electronic monitoring after posting bond for a string of felony charges, vaulted from his balcony and avoided capture was June 12, after sheriff’s officers attempted to relocate him.
The apartment’s leaseholder no longer wanted him to stay there, according to the sheriff’s office, so officers went to the 2300 block of South Michigan Avenue to “relocate him or re-incarcerate him.” When officers arrived at the apartment, 23-year-old Marbley stepped out onto the patio and jumped to a neighboring parking garage—leaving the sheriff’s officers in his dust, according to authorities.
But officers were ready Tuesday when they returned to the apartment. As an officer knocked on the door, cops saw Marbley once again dash to the patio and spring to the garage next-door, the sheriff’s office said. Officers chased him down in a parking lot about a block away and arrested him.
Marbley was denied bond Wednesday and now has escape and resisting a peace officer tacked on to his gun and drug charges. His original March charges included being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. He had posted $5,000 of his $50,000 D-bond.
Marbley has nine previous convictions—including felony drug possession, according to the sheriff’s office. He also was convicted of a felony in 2014 after escaping from electronic monitoring for nine days. Having a place to stay is a requirement of electronic monitoring in Cook County.
