Chicago Housing Authority Reports Largest Waitlist in Years

More than 282,000 people registered for the waitlist from Oct. 27 through Nov. 24, officials said

Chicago Housing Authority officials say the registration waitlist for low-income housing is the largest its been in several years.

More than 282,000 people had registered for the waitlist by the Monday deadline, officials said. Those who registered since the Oct. 27 kick-off represent about half of low-income eligible households in the city.

About 203,000 people registered for a family waiting list in 2010, they said.

Officials with the housing authority said they are targeting homeless populations.

A Tuesday news release said about 15,900 of those who registered reported being homeless, meaning they live in a shelter or transitional housing. In January 2014 the number was about 6,300 people.

A computer lottery will take place early next year for those on the list.
