What Parents Need to Know if Chicago Teachers Strike Tuesday

With hours left until the midnight deadline, Chicago Public Schools parents are preparing for yet another teachers strike in the city.

Though talks were still underway Monday evening, and it remained unclear if an agreement would be reached, there was little time left before teachers hit the picket lines Tuesday.

As teachers started picking up their strike materials Monday afternoon, parents were preparing for what this would mean for students.

If teachers do strike Tuesday, students will be able to spend the normal day in schools if they have nowhere else to go.

All CPS school buildings will remain open and will provide a free breakfast and lunch to students who need them, but district officials encourage parents to find alternative options because of limited staff available during a strike.

The Chicago Transit Authority will also provide free transportation to students for the duration of any strike from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., city officials said.

Alternative options for child care include a number of Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Library, and nonprofit organization sites listed on Chicago Public Schools’ website.
