The pilot of a small plane that crashed near Rockford Tuesday morning died on impact, according to Federal Aviation Administration officials.

Sources told NBCChicago that the Lancair 235 kit plane, a small, single-engine craft, crashed into a field about five to eight miles from Rockford Airport.

The plane was under "visual flight rules," the FAA said, which means there was no flight plan.

It's not known where the aircraft took off from or where it was headed.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
