‘Fighting The Same Fight': Rival Football Coach, Player Come Together Over Cancer Battles

After Proviso West football player Justin Green underwent months of chemotherapy, coach Scottie Ware found out about Justin's diagnosis when he did not spot the star Proviso West player at the start of the season.

“I was more heartbroken about finding out I couldn’t play football than me having actual cancer,” Green said.

On Saturday, the Proviso East coach who is a cancer survivor, and the Proviso West player, who has been fighting it, embraced.

“Separate Provisos but we are fighting the same fight against cancer and we wanted to be there for him anyway possible I can,” Ware said.

Justin's mom hopes that her son’s fight will end with him getting the chance to play during team’s final game of the season.

“I hate this had to happen to him, but he has handled it with such grace and such positivity,” Letitia Hinkle said.

Ware has been cancer free for two years, and Justin hopes to get the same news later this week so he can continue his football career into college.
