Grandson Charged in Cop's Murder

Officer was on force for 25 years

An off-duty Chicago Police officer's 15-year-old granson has been charged as an adult in her murder.

Hester Scott was found beaten to death Friday in the 8800 block of South Wallace. Her body was found in a sewer trap behind her Gresham neighborhood home, police said.

Scott's grandson, Keshawn Perkins, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of armed robbery, the Sun-Times reported.

Scott had adopted Perkins, who lived with her.  The crime happened when Scott started yelling at Perkins for skipping school, according to prosecutors.  The teen hit her with a lamp, then repeatedly stabbed her with a kitchen knife, according to the Sun-Times.

The 55-year-old had been on the force for 25 years.

Perkins is due in court on Monday.  If convicted, the minimum sentence is life in prison, because the victim was a police officer, the paper reported.
