A 20-year-old man was taken into police custody after he allegedly attempted to rob an off-duty Chicago police officer.

The man approached the officer around 12:30 a.m.while the officer was walking in the 1700 block of West Diversey Parkway, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

The man displayed a knife and demanded money, police said.

The off-duty officer announced his office and took the suspect into custody. Patrolling police officers arrived at the scene to assist the officer and took the suspect into custody.

The officer was not injured in the incident and charges were pending.
