Ohio State Soccer Player Dies at 19

The 19-year-old was a junior enrolled in a premed program who wanted to become a surgeon

An Ohio State soccer player drowned while swimming with some of his teammates at a lake outside Columbus.

Nineteen-year-old Fikayo Idowu died Friday. He was from Madison, Mississippi, and had been on the Ohio State soccer team since 2014.

The university confirmed the death in a statement posted to its Facebook account Saturday afternoon, calling Idowu “an outstanding young man who touched the lives of so many.”

Soccer coach John Bluem tells The Columbus Dispatch that the drowning happened at Apple Valley Lake in Knox County, about 40 miles northeast of the campus.

Idowu was a junior enrolled in a premed program, the Columbus Dispatch reports. He wanted to become a surgeon.

Friends and teammates gathered Saturday night to remember Idowu at the university's soccer stadium.

Further details surrounding his death have not been made available.
