Off-Duty Sheriff's Officer Robbed

The officer was approached by two males wearing masks about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of West Belmont, police said

An off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s officer was robbed of his cellphone and some cash on Wednesday night, then exchanged gunfire with the robbers, authorities said.

The officer was attending a poker tournament on the 1900 block of West Belmont, in Chicago's Roscoe Village neighborhood, when he stepped outside for some air and noticed someone on the ground being robbed.

The robbers then turned to rob the officer and shots were exchanged, police said.

Witnesses said there were about 50 people attending the poker tournament, and one witness said he was afraid the robbers were targeting people coming out of the poker game with their winnings.

No one was in custody in connection with the robbery as of 5:30 a.m. Thursday, but authorities were continuing their investigation.
