Obama Close to Naming First Dog

The Labradoodle is one of the possible breeds that the Obama family is considering as First Dog.

It looks like the Obama family may be getting closer to choosing the First Dog.

President-elect Barack Obama told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that the dog will probably be a “Labradoodle” or a “Portuguese Water Hound.” The Chicagoist points out that the actual name is "Portuguese Water Dog," but they kindly "cut Obama some slack since he’s been busy saving the economy."

"This has been harder than finding a commerce secretary," Obama said on ABC's This Week.

Both dogs are considered good choices for people with allergies as neither are shedders.

The Portuguese Water Dog, a pedigree pup, is a "highly intelligent utilitarian breed ... distinguished by two coat types, either curly or wavy ... The Portuguese Water Dog provides an indelible impression of strength, spirit, and soundness," according to the American Kennel Club.

The Labradoodle is a designer hybrid, developed between a cross of the Standard Poodle, and the Yellow and/or Black Labradors. They were developed for companion purposes and to provide the best of both worlds. "They seem to have narrowed it down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound,'' Obama told Stephanopoulos. "We're closing in on it.''
