Man, 66, Killed in Crash With Chicago Police SUV in Roseland

A 66-year-old man was killed in a crash with a Chicago Police squad car late Monday night in the city’s Roseland neighborhood, officials said.

Police say officers were responding to call of shots fired around 10:40 p.m. and heading northbound on Michigan Avenue on Chicago’s Far South Side when they collided with a 1998 Honda Coupe in the intersection at 105th Street.

Jack Burris, 66, of the Chatham neighborhood was driving the Honda at the time, police said. He was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

A police spokesperson said the two male tactical officers were traveling in an unmarked Ford SUV, with its emergency lights and equipment activated, when the vehicles collided.

Both officers involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where they were treated and released.

The cause of the accident is still unknown. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Investigations Unit is investigating the incident.
