‘Local' Dems Back Home to Wisconsin

Sen. Jon Erpenbach says just because they're home, doesn't mean their work is done

The 14 Democratic Senators that fled Wisconsin for Illinois last month are back home.

Sen. Jon Erpenbach told NBCChicago he arrived at his home Friday after a busy, exhausting week that ended with Gov. Scott Walker signing into law the bill that Dems left Wisconsin to protest.

The legislation takes away most collective bargaining rights from public workers, an idea that Erpenbach has said a majority of Wisconsin residents don't support.

On Wednesday, Wisconsin Republicans unexpectedly pushed the bill through the Senate by separating bargaining rights from Walker's fiscal "budget repair bill" to vote without needing the minimum 20 senators.

A rally is planned in Madison on Saturday, and some of the Dems have said they'll attend to support protesters calling for a recall of Walker.

Until then, Erpenbach is getting his life back to normal after spending weeks in hotel rooms in and around the Chicago area, paying for the rooms out of pocket and with help from his parents.

"I'm happy to be home," he said.

Erpenbach said he's glad their leaving helped push conversation forward about the bill. He's looking forward to helping out in the recall, to gather signatures and "get back to work."

"We're not done yet," Erpenbach said.
