2 Dead, 2 Hurt in West Side Chicago Fire: CFD

Two people have died and two others were injured after a fire broke out in a dwelling on Chicago's West Side Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The flames sparked sometime before 10 a.m. in the 5200 block of West Race in the city's South Austin neighborhood.

At least four ambulances were called to the scene and two people were transported in "extremely critical" condition to West Suburban Medical Center, according to Chicago Fire Media Affairs.

A third person was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in fair condition and a woman was being evaluated at the scene, according to fire officials.

Larry Langford with the Chicago Fire Department later confirmed one person had died and a second was revived at the hospital but remained in extremely critical condition. Thirty minutes later, fire officials said a second person had died.

The deceased included a man and a woman, according to the fire department.  They were identified as 60-year-old Peggy Davis and 86-year-old Arthur Davis, who both lived at the home.

Fire officials said injuries were due to smoke inhalation and burns.

According to the fire department, five people were in the home at the time the blaze sparked. One man exited the house from the basement and two women were assisted out. Two people were pulled out of the building by firefighters.

The fire was put out just after 10:30 a.m., authorities said.

Initially, investigators said no smoke detectors appeared to be in the home, but a later investigation revealed at least one smoke detector found was working but was destroyed in the fire. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
