Family Reacts to Arrest in Mya Lyons' Death

Richard Lyons maintains innocence, attorney says

As police continue to question Mya Lyons' father in connection to her murder, the girl's mother conveyed today that the development has been hard on her family.

"[Ericka] is not feeling well at all to know that possibly [the man] that helped her bring a child into this world could have possibly took her out in a brutal way," said Dawn Valenti, a community activist and family friend of Mya's mother, Ericka Barnes.

"It has been two-and-a-half years and nobody has been charged," Valenti said.

Richard Lyons, 42, was taken into custody Monday in connection to Mya's July 2008 unsolved murder, police said. No charges have been filed, and earlier today Police Superintendent Jody Weis said that charges won't come soon.

Alan Blumenthal, Lyons' attorney, told reporters that Lyons has cooperated with police and given a DNA sample.

"He has proclaimed his innocence from day one and maintains his innocence today," Blumenthal said.
