Doctor: Detroit Boy Found in Basement Was Denied Food, Water

A doctor says a Detroit boy missing for 11 days told authorities that he was sent to the basement because he couldn't do a rigorous workout.

Charlie Bothuell V was 12 years old last June when police found him among boxes in the basement after a highly publicized search in Detroit. Charlie Bothuell IV and Monique Dillard-Bothuell are charged with child abuse and torture.

A judge is hearing evidence Friday to determine whether the couple will face trial. Dr. Dena Nazer didn't examine Charlie, but her testimony was based on a review of health records and interviews.

Nazer says Charlie indicated that his stepmother sent him to the basement. She says Charlie was denied proper food and water and would sneak upstairs to find food.

Charlie now is 13.
