Chicago Doctor on the Run from FBI

An international manhunt is under way for an Illinois doctor who allegedly defrauded state and private insurance companies.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dr. Gautam Gupta has been charged with felony counts of mail fraud, health care fraud and conspiracy in a criminal complaint.

The FBI belives he may have fled to India, and they've enlisted the help of Interpol to find him.

Gupta owns and operates several Nutrition Clinic locations in the Chicago area. Ads for his clinics have blanketed the Chicago airwaves.

Federal officials allege Gupta or his staff, acting at his direction, submitted hundreds of insurance claims for unnecessary procedures or procedures that were never performed.  If convicted, he could face up to 35 years in prison.

Gupta has a checkered past, including an indictment on insider trading charges, which ended in him having to pay nearly $700,000 in penalties.  He also had his license to prescribe controlled substances suspended for a year, in part because a state board found he wasn't keeping proper records.

Gupta's last known address was 1660 N. Mulford Road, in Rockford.  He's about 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds.  Gupta has gray hair, and sometimes wears it in a pony tail.

Anyone who spots Gupta is urged to call the Chicago FBI office at (312) 421-6700.
