Chicago Man Drowns in Wisconsin Dells

Family and witnesses attempted to rescue the man but they were unsuccessful, according to authorities

A 21-year-old man from Chicago died over the holiday weekend while swimming in the Wisconsin River in the Wisconsin Dells.

Police said the man was fishing on a rock island area in the river and disappeared under water while trying to swim back to shore just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

“The male victim appeared to have gotten caught in the strong current and went under,” police said in a statement Monday, noting that the Wisconsin River is “continuously changing and the current is very strong.”

Family and witnesses attempted to rescue the man but they were unsuccessful, according to authorities.

It took nearly two days for divers to find the man’s body, which was located just before 6 p.m. Monday.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s office is investigating the death.

The victim’s name had not been released as of Monday evening.
