American Art to Take Over Billboards This Summer

Museums nominated 100 artworks for the public to vote on. Voting ends May 7

Time is running out for those looking to cast a vote in what is set to be the largest outdoor art show showcasing American works.

Earlier this month, five museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, asked the public to vote online and choose which artwork will be featured on 50,000 displays for the “Art Everywhere” initiative in August.

Museums nominated 100 artworks to choose from, including Grant Wood's "American Gothic," Georgia O'Keeffe's "Summer Days," Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," and Jasper Johns' "Three Flags."

Among other artists featured are Andy Warhol, Gilbert Stuart and Mary Cassatt.

The final selection of 50 works will be showcased in the campaign for the month of August, and will replace thousands of out of home advertisements across America, including those on billboards, bus shelters, subway posters and more. Members of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America are donating the space.

“This collaborative effort is the first of its kind in the US, and follows a successful version in the UK in the summer of 2013, with plans to be repeated this summer as well,” the campaign’s website reads. “It affords an unprecedented opportunity to acquaint countless millions of Americans and visitors to our country with some of America’s best and most memorable artworks.”

Participating museums include the Art Institute of Chicago, Dallas Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

Voting ends May 7.
