Five were killed in shootings across Chicago within 24 hours

Five people were killed and 15 more were injured in multiple shootings over the holiday weekend.

Police say one man was killed just before 8 p.m. Monday on the 7600 block of South Eberhart Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood. 

He was shot multiple times by a group of men after stepping in to protect his girlfriend, who was being attacked by several women, the Chicago Tribune reports. Crews took him to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 22-year-old woman was shot to death during a fight on the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive around 11:15 p.m.

A third person was murdered when shots rang out just before midnight on the 6500 block of South Lowe Avenue.  A 27 year-old man died from shots to his abdomen, according to the Tribune.  

A fourth person was killed and two more injured just minutes after midnight when a male gunman approached from a gangway and opened fire on a group on the 7900 block of South Artesian Avenue, the Tribune reports.

The fifth person killed, a man believed to be in his 20s, was hit several times in a drive-by shooting, according to the paper.

The other 13 people hurt include a13 year-old shot in front of his West Chesterfield home, a 15 year-old boy shot in the Lawndale neighborhood and two teens, 14 and 16, shot in a drive-by in the Morgan Park neighborhood.
