5 Dead, At Least 22 Wounded in Weekend Violence

Among the victims were a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the Austin neighborhood and a 50-year-old man stabbed to death during an argument in a Humboldt Park establishment

Five people are dead, and at least 22 have been injured in shootings and stabbings across Chicago since Friday evening.

The violence began early Friday evening following the warmer than average day.

A 36-year-old man was shot dead around 10:50 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said. He and a 35-year-old man were sitting in a parked car in the 1100 block of North Springfield when someone walked up to them and fired shots, police said.

The 36-year-old man was shot in the chest and later died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. The other victim is in serious condition after being shot in the neck.

Just after the shooting, the two men took themselves to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center. The 26-year-old man was later transferred to Stroger, police said.

Both victims are documented gang members, a police source said.

Less than an hour before that shooting, an 18-year-old man who police say pointed a gun at officers was killed in a police-involved shooting at about 10:10 p.m. Friday near 74th Street and Merrill in the South Shore neighborhood.

Officers on patrol in the area had heard shots fired and saw a van speeding away from the scene before pursuing the suspect, police said.

The officers said they saw someone jump from the van with a gun in his hand and ordered him to drop his weapon, but he instead pointed it at them. An officer fired two shots, hitting and killing the man. 

The 18-year-old has been identified as Jeffery Kemp of the 7400 block of South Jeffery.

Another man was killed early Saturday morning in a fight and subsequent stabbing at an establishment in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Two 50-year-old men who knew each other got into a fight in the establishment in the 2600 block of West Chicago Avenue, which police have not identified, at about 1:05 a.m. One man then stabbed the other in the chest with a knife, police said.

The victim was taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. No one is in custody in the stabbing.

A 43-year-old man was found dead around 5:20 a.m. Sunday after a shooting in the 2300 block of South Washtenaw in Little Village. He was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A 34-year-old woman was also fatally shot in the head around that same time in the 2700 block of North Lavergne in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood.

She had been walking with a man in the block when someone got out of a car and fired shots at them, shooting her in the head and striking the man repeatedly. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where the woman later died.

At least 22 other people have been injured in shootings since Friday evening:

  • Two men, aged 22 and 24, and a 23-year-old woman were shot at about 9 p.m. Friday in the 9300 block of South Eggleston in the Washington Heights neighborhood. They had been standing in a group on the block when someone in a passing light-colored sedan fired shots at them, police said. A police source said the 22-year-old man, a documented gang member, was shot in the arm and hip; the other man was shot in the arm and the woman in the leg. All of them are in stable condition. No one is in custody, police said.
  • A man driving a car was shot in the head and leg at about 9:30 p.m. Friday night in the 1000 block of West Congress Parkway in the University Village neighborhood. The man was stopped at a stoplight when someone in a light-colored vehicle fired shots at him, police said. The man kept driving until he crashed a few blocks away. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 16-year-old boy was shot in the buttocks at about 10:10 p.m. Friday in the 4900 block of West Ohio Street in the Austin neighborhood. The teen was standing on the street when someone walked up to him and fired shots, police said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in stable condition. A police source said the boy is a documented gang member.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot multiple times at about 11:50 p.m. Friday in the 2900 block of North Milwaukee in the Logan Square neighborhood. The man was shot after he allegedly pointed a gun at a 47-year-old man, who then fired his own gun in self-defense, police said. The 22-year-old was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.
  • A 28-year-old sustained multiple gunshot wounds at about 12:45 a.m. Saturday in he 1500 block of South Central Park in the North Lawndale neighborhood. The man was walking in the block when someone inside a car that pulled up to him fired shots, police said. A friend of the victim's took him to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition. A police source said the victim was a documented gang member.
  • A 39-year-old man was shot in the leg at about 1:23 a.m. Saturday in the 3900 block of West Addison in the Irving Park neighborhood. The man was standing in the block when someone inside an SUV pulled up and fired shots. The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. A police source said he was a documented gang member.
  • A 40-year-old man was shot in stomach and buttocks at about 4:20 a.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of North Homan in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The man was walking in the block when someone in a passing van fired two rounds of shots at him. The victim was taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in serious condition and later transferred to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital. A police source said the victim is a documented gang member.
  • A 25-year-old man was shot in the calf at about 6:35 a.m. Saturday in the 3300 block of West Le Moyne in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The man was standing outside when he heard shots fired and felt pain, police said. He took himself to Norwegian American Hospital in good condition. A police source said he is a documented gang member.
  • A 24-year-old man was shot in the shoulder during an argument with another man at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of North Massasoit in the Austin neighborhood. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
  • A 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday in the 100 block of West 127th Street on the Far South Side. The man walked to Roseland Community Hospital following the shooting and was listed in good condition.
  • Two people were shot at about 6:35 a.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of West Diversey in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
  • A 20-year-old man was shot in the finger at about 1 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West 59th Street in the Englewood neighborhood. He then drove himself to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, where he was listed in good condition. A police source said the shooting was related to a gambling incident, and the man is a documented gang member.
  • Two men were shot at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday in the 900 block of North Trumball Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The men were standing outside when they heard gunshots and realized they had been struck. An 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and a 21-year-old man was shot in the toe, police said. They were taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in good condition. A police source said they were documented gang members.
  • Two men and one woman were shot at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday near 79th and Wood in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
  • A 32-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting around 7:30 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Van Buren Street. The man was walking on the block when someone walked out of an alley and fired several shots in his direction. The man was taken to Loretto Hospital by a friend and was later transported to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
  • A 26-year-old man was shot just before 9 p.m. while sitting in a vehicle in the 8100 block of South Muskegon. The man drove from the scene to the 8100 block of South Manistee where police and emergency responders were called. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and shoulder.
