Young Boy Critically Wounded in Shooting Advocated Against Violence

13-year-old Zarriel Trotter was shot Friday night in the South Austin neighborhood

A young boy shot in Chicago’s South Austin neighborhood Friday night spoke out in an anti-violence ad just last year, according to his school's principal.

13-year-old Zarriel Trotter is a student at Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School, said principal Elizabeth Dunn, who shared the public service announcement with NBC 5.

"I don't want to live around my community where I got to keep on hearing and hearing people keep on getting shot, people keep on getting killed," Zarriel says in the video.

The ad was released in Feb. 2015 by a social campaign called 'Black is Human.' Zarriel appears just before the 30 second mark:

Zarriel was shot in the lower back in the 5500 block of West Jackson at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday night, police confirmed.

Authorities say two groups of individuals were involved in a "heated argument" in the street when a man in one of the groups pulled out a gun and began firing shots.

Zarriel was standing on the sidewalk, away from both groups, and was shot in the lower back. Police say he was not involved in the altercation, and was not the intended target.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, according to police.
